Fear & Greed index

Also called: fear and greed, sentiment, mood

A 0–100 gauge of how much risk investors are willing to take, built from six market signals. PlanMyWealth calculates its own version and shows every input.

Formula

Index = Average of six indicator scores, each the percentile of today's reading over the past year

Worked example

  1. Example scores: momentum 72, strength 65, volatility 58, safe haven 40, junk bonds 55, breadth 30
  2. Average = (72 + 65 + 58 + 40 + 55 + 30) ÷ 6 = 53.3

Result: 53 · Neutral

How to read it

0–25 extreme fear, 25–45 fear, 45–55 neutral, 55–75 greed, 75–100 extreme greed. Often read as a contrarian signal.
