ISA allowance

Also called: isa, tax free, tax year

Each tax year (6 April to 5 April) you can put up to £20,000 of new money into ISAs. Everything inside grows free of UK tax on gains and dividends. Unused allowance doesn't roll over.

Formula

Allowance left = £20,000 − Deposits into ISAs this tax year

Worked example

  1. Example: £6,500 deposited since 6 April
  2. Left = £20,000 − £6,500 = £13,500
  3. With 5 months to go → about £2,700 a month to use it all

Result: £13,500 left

How to read it

The £20,000 is shared across all your ISAs. From April 2027 only £12,000 of it can go into cash ISAs; stocks and shares ISAs can still take the full amount.
